Pool Water Chemistry 101: A Beginner's Guide
Why Water Chemistry Matters
Proper water chemistry is essential for swimmer health, equipment longevity, and water clarity. Even the best Waterstar equipment can't compensate for neglected water balance.
The Big Three Parameters
1. pH (7.2 - 7.6)
pH measures acidity. Too low corrodes equipment; too high reduces chlorine effectiveness and causes scale buildup. Test daily and adjust with pH+ or pH- chemicals.
2. Total Alkalinity (80-120 ppm)
Alkalinity acts as a pH buffer. Proper alkalinity prevents pH from swinging wildly. Always adjust alkalinity before pH.
3. Free Chlorine (1-3 ppm)
Chlorine sanitizes the water, killing bacteria and algae. Maintain consistent levels for safe swimming.
Secondary Parameters
- Calcium Hardness (200-400 ppm): Prevents surface etching and equipment corrosion
- Cyanuric Acid (30-50 ppm): Protects chlorine from UV degradation
- Total Dissolved Solids: Drain and refill when TDS exceeds 1,500 ppm
