How to Winterize Your Pool in 7 Easy Steps
Why Winterization Matters
Proper winterization prevents freeze damage, algae growth, and equipment deterioration. Follow these 7 steps to keep your pool safe during the cold months.
Step 1: Balance Water Chemistry
Adjust pH to 7.2-7.6, alkalinity to 80-120 ppm, and calcium hardness to 200-400 ppm.
Step 2: Deep Clean
Vacuum the pool thoroughly and brush all surfaces. Remove any debris from skimmer baskets.
Step 3: Lower Water Level
Lower the water 4-6 inches below the skimmer mouth to prevent freeze damage to the skimmer.
Step 4: Drain Equipment
Drain water from pumps, filters, heaters, and all plumbing lines. Residual water can freeze and crack equipment.
Step 5: Add Winter Chemicals
Add winterizing chemical kit including algaecide and a slow-dissolving chlorine floater.
Step 6: Install Winter Cover
Use a quality safety cover to keep debris out and prevent accidents. Ensure it's secured tightly.
Step 7: Periodic Checks
Check the cover monthly for water accumulation and pump it off. Inspect for any damage.
