The Outlet That Keeps the Overflow Channel Working
An overflow channel collects water; the GD-1 gutter drain is what actually gets rid of it. Fitted into the floor of the channel, each GD-1 takes the mixed stream of skimmed surface water arriving from both directions and passes it downward into the pipework that leads to the balance tank. If the outlets are undersized or too few, the channel backs up, water re-enters the pool carrying the very impurities the rim just removed, and in heavy use the channel can overtop onto the deck. Waterstar therefore treats the humble gutter drain as a hydraulic component with a defined duty, not as an afterthought fitting, and manufactures it to the same ISO 9001 discipline as the rest of the overflow range.
A 63 mm Weld Connection and Resistant Plastic Body
The GD-1 terminates in a socket for a 63 mm weld pipe, the workhorse diameter of pool circulation pipework, so the drain joins the collector line with a solvent-welded joint that is permanent, pressure-tight and familiar to every pool plumbing crew in the region. The body is moulded from plastic engineered to resist both chemicals and ultraviolet light: it spends its whole life bathed in chlorinated water, and on open-air pools the channel floor also receives direct sun for part of every day. Materials without this dual resistance chalk, fade and finally crack at the weld spigot — precisely the failure a buried, tiled-in fitting must never suffer, because replacing it means breaking out finished work.
How Many Drains Along a Channel
The governing rule is simple to state: gutter drains must be spaced closely enough that the channel never overflows at peak bather surge. When a group of swimmers enters at once, the displaced water arrives at the rim as a wave, and for a short time the channel carries far more than its quiet-day average; each GD-1 clears the stretch of channel on either side of it, so spacing is chosen from perimeter length, channel depth and expected surge rather than from habit. Long straight runs, corners and steps areas each deserve attention in the layout. Pool designers are invited to send the pool perimeter, channel profile and bather load to the Waterstar factory engineers for a drain count and spacing recommendation.
