The hose is the part most people undersize. Waterstar produces flexible vacuum hoses in 6 m (VH-6), 12 m (VH-12), 15 m (VH-15) and 25 m (VH-25) lengths, all built for suction cleaning through the skimmer. The correct length is the distance from your skimmer to the farthest corner of the pool floor, plus a working margin of a couple of metres; too short and you strain the hose at full stretch, too long and you drag unnecessary coils that trap air and break the suction. For a compact residential pool the 6 m hose is usually right, family pools take 12 or 15 m, and the 25 m hose serves large hotel and semi-olympic basins.

A Weekly Routine That Ties the Tools Together

Here is the sequence I have taught pool crews for years. Skim the surface daily with a flat leaf skimmer net before debris sinks and stains. Once a week, brush the walls, steps and waterline with a curved brush to break up algae before it takes hold. Then connect the vacuum head to the telescopic handle, prime the hose with water, seat it on the skimmer vacuum plate and vacuum the floor in slow, overlapping passes so you do not stir up the sediment. Lift sunken leaves first with a deep skimmer net if there has been a storm. Finally, check the water temperature with the T-10 thermometer and log it; temperature drives chlorine consumption more than most owners realise.
