Why pool lights run on 12 volts

Underwater lighting is the one part of a swimming pool where electrical safety is absolute: the fitting sits permanently below the waterline, in reach of swimmers. That is why every Waterstar pool light runs at 12-14V AC, fed from a safety isolating transformer installed in the plant room — never directly from the 220V mains. At this voltage a fault cannot deliver a dangerous shock through the water, and the transformer provides galvanic separation between the mains and the pool. The lights themselves are sealed to IP68, the rating for continuous submersion, with cable glands and gaskets keeping the housing dry for the life of the fitting.

Nicheless LED lights: 18W, 24W and 36W

The nicheless range — LL-18, LL-24 and LL-36 — mounts flat against the pool wall without a recessed niche, which makes it the fastest light to specify on new builds and the simplest to retrofit. Each unit runs on 12-14V AC, ships with a 3-metre cable, and is available in warm or white light. Choose 18W for spas and small plunge pools, 24W as the standard fitting for residential pools, and 36W where the pool is wide or deep and each fitting has to cover more water. Spacing the lights evenly along one wall, aimed away from the house's main viewing angle, gives level illumination without glare.

Niche lights for concrete and liner pools

Where a classic recessed look is wanted, the niche range installs into a housing cast into the wall: UWL-1 for concrete pools and UWL-1-L for liner pools, each engineered with glands and neoprene seals to international safety measures and built from chemical-resistant materials that tolerate pool water treatment. Because the lamp inside is serviceable, a failed source does not mean replacing the fitting: Waterstar replacement LED bulbs LB-18, LB-24 and LB-36 run on 12V with transparent lenses and full brass connectors, and swap in without draining the pool below niche level.

Transformers and junction boxes: powering the system

Every 12V lighting circuit needs two supporting components. The T-1-300 safety isolated transformer, 330 VA, steps 220-230V down to 12-14V, is IP65-protected and complies with BS-EN 60742; one unit will run a group of 18W fittings, and larger installations simply divide the lights across several transformers or use the 300W wall-mount version. The JB-1 junction box collects the light cables above water level and seals the connections to IP68, supporting one or two lights per box with its redesigned integrated transformer. Mount junction boxes above the waterline behind the beach or coping, keep the low-voltage cable runs short, and lighting maintenance never requires more than opening a box.

Choosing a lighting layout

A practical layout starts from the pool geometry. Fit lights on the long wall facing away from the main seating area so the sources are hidden and the water glows; one 24W fitting per 4 to 5 metres of wall length is a sensible starting density for residential pools, adjusted up for dark finishes, which absorb light, and down for pale mosaics.
