Swimming Pool Skimmers

Pool skimmers made in Egypt: standard and wide-mouth models for concrete and liner pools, 14x24 cm and 17.5x35 cm openings, with baskets, weir doors and vacuum plates.

What a skimmer does

The skimmer is the pool's first line of filtration. Set into the wall exactly at the waterline, it draws the surface layer of water — where leaves, dust, sunscreen and insects concentrate before they can sink — into a basket, then passes the pre-cleaned water on to the pump and filter. A floating weir door at the mouth keeps the draw at the surface, speeds up the skimming action in light wind, and stops collected debris drifting back into the pool when the pump switches off. Because the basket catches coarse debris before the pump strainer and sand filter see it, a well-placed skimmer directly extends filter cycles and protects the pump.

Standard or wide mouth

Waterstar manufactures both openings. The standard skimmer has a 14 by 24 cm inlet — the proven choice for most residential pools, and the format professional builders specify by default. The wide-mouth version opens to 17.5 by 35 cm, capturing a broader band of surface water per unit: specify it where the pool has a large surface area, heavy leaf fall from surrounding planting, or prevailing wind that pushes debris toward one end. In the customizable second-generation range, the standard inlet is 143 by 148 mm and the wide mouth is 185 by 300 mm, both with a 1.5 inch outlet that connects directly to standard suction pipework.

Concrete and liner versions

Every model ships in a concrete-pool and a liner-pool version. The concrete versions cast into the wall shuttering and tile in flush with the finish. The liner versions add the sealing faceplate and gasket set that clamps the liner membrane watertight around the opening — the detail that decides whether a liner pool stays dry behind the membrane. Bodies are moulded from UV- and chemical-resistant plastic that tolerates Egyptian sun and sustained chlorine exposure, and every wear item — basket, weir door, lid, faceplate, gaskets and screws — is stocked as a spare part in Egypt, so a broken basket never takes the pool out of service.

How many skimmers, and where

Practical sizing is one skimmer per 25 to 30 square metres of water surface, always rounding up, with a minimum of one even for the smallest pool. Position skimmers on the downwind side so the prevailing breeze drives floating debris into the mouth, and balance them with the return inlets on the opposite wall so surface water sweeps across the whole pool. The skimmer also doubles as the service point for manual cleaning: a vacuum plate seats on the basket, so the suction hose of a vacuum head connects through the skimmer without extra pipework. Send us the pool plan and our engineers will position skimmers, inlets and the main drain as one hydraulic scheme.
