Safety Transformers for Pool Lighting

Why an isolating transformer is not optional
Underwater lights sit in the one place where a mains fault could be lethal, so the electrical code answer is categorical: pool lighting runs on safety extra-low voltage, delivered through a safety isolating transformer. The transformer does two jobs at once. It steps 220-230V down to the 12-14V the lamps need, and — more importantly — its isolated windings galvanically separate the pool circuit from the mains, so even a damaged cable in the water cannot put mains potential across a swimmer. This is why a transformer designed for general lighting is not acceptable: only a safety isolating transformer built and tested to the standard for pool duty belongs in the plant room.
The Waterstar T-1-300
The T-1-300 is Waterstar's safety isolated transformer for swimming pools, fountains and spas: 330 VA capacity, primary 220-230V, secondary 12-14V, enclosure protected to IP65 against dust and water jets, and compliant with BS-EN 60742, the standard governing isolating transformers. One unit powers a group of six to eight 18W LED fittings, which covers the complete lighting circuit of a typical residential pool from a single point in the plant room. Terminals accept the standard pool-light cable runs, and the sealed enclosure tolerates the humid, splash-prone environment of a real pump room.
Sizing the transformer to the lighting load
Transformer sizing is a simple sum with a margin: add the wattage of every lamp on the circuit and keep the total comfortably below the transformer's VA rating — as a working rule, load the transformer to no more than about 80 percent of capacity so it runs cool and inrush at switch-on stays benign. A 330 VA unit therefore carries up to roughly 260W of lamps: for example ten 24W fittings, or seven 36W fittings. Larger pools simply split the lights into groups, each on its own transformer — a division that also gives independent switching of lighting zones. For installations built around one or two lights, the JB-1 junction box with its integrated transformer is the compact alternative, and a 300W wall-mount transformer covers multi-light combinations.
Installation practice
Mount the transformer in the plant room or a ventilated dry enclosure above flood level, as close to the pool as the electrical layout allows: low-voltage runs lose voltage over distance, and keeping the 12V side short preserves full brightness at the lamp. Feed the primary from its own protected circuit with residual-current protection, and land the secondary in an IP68 junction box above the waterline. Never join the low-voltage cable underwater or in the niche.
