How to choose a pool pump: flow, head and the performance curve

A pool pump is chosen on two things read together: the circulation flow the pool needs and the head the pump must work against — the resistance of the pipes, fittings and filter bed plus any height difference between the pump and the water. Horsepower alone does not tell you whether a pump suits a pool, and the two never peak at the same time: as head rises, the flow a pump delivers falls along its curve.

Work out the flow from turnover: divide the pool volume by the turnover time you want — commonly six to eight hours on a private pool. Then read the pump's performance curve, published on each SuperStar and HyperFlow product page, at the head of your installation. A long suction run with many bends passes noticeably less water than a short, straight one, which is why we size pumps from the curve and not from a headline number.

SuperStar or HyperFlow

Both families come in 1, 1.5 and 2 HP single-phase (220–240 V) and 3 HP three-phase (220/380 V). SuperStar has 2-inch inlet and outlet connections and an overall size of 600 × 375.5 × 390 mm (608 mm long at 3 HP), so it suits larger 2-inch pipework. HyperFlow has a 1.5-inch inlet and measures 597 × 254 × 265 mm, the compact choice for tight plant rooms. All eight models run at 2800–2840 rpm with Class F insulation and IP55 motor protection, and each motor rating is shared by both families.

Which motor size for which pool

SS-100M and HF-100M, at 0.75 kW (1 HP), are the units for small and medium residential pools. SS-150M and HF-150M, at 1.1 kW (1.5 HP), suit medium villa pools and longer pipe runs. SS-200M and HF-200M, at 1.5 kW (2 HP), suit large residential pools, roof-top pools with high static head and small hotel pools. SS-300T and HF-300T, at 2.2 kW (3 HP) three-phase, are built for commercial duty — hotel, club and competition pools where the filter and pipework are sized for continuous high flow.

A bigger pump is not a better pump. It costs more to run, raises the pressure across the filter and can push the flow above the filter's rated flow, which spoils filtration.

Single phase or three phase

Model codes ending in M are single-phase 220–240 V; codes ending in T are three-phase 220/380 V. Single-phase pumps are the right choice for villas and residential compounds with a domestic supply, run from a standard consumer unit with the correct breaker and residual-current protection. Three-phase pumps draw less current per phase for the same output and tolerate long duty cycles, which is why commercial installations with a three-phase supply should specify the T models; they are also the ones to pair with a soft starter or a variable-frequency drive. The 1 HP models are 50 Hz, with 60 Hz as an option.

Self-priming, daily running and spare parts

Every Waterstar pool pump is self-priming: the strainer housing holds enough water for the impeller to clear air from the suction line, so the pump recovers on its own after backwashing or after the basket has been emptied. Priming still depends on the installation — keep the suction line short and straight, avoid high points that trap air, and check that every union and the lid O-ring seal, because an air leak on the suction side is the most common reason a pump will not hold prime.

The clear-lid strainer basket shows when leaves and hair are restricting flow and lifts out without tools; cleaning it weekly keeps the pump at its design flow and protects the mechanical seal. Matching the pump to the filter

A pool pump should never be sized in isolation: the filter sets the maximum flow the system can accept. As a guide, a 1 HP pump pairs with a T500-20 or T600-24 sand filter, the 1.5 HP and 2 HP models with a T750-30a or T900-36, and the 3 HP three-phase units with a T1005-42 or a WS-series commercial filter.
