Flow rate, head and how to size a pool pump
A swimming pool pump is specified by two numbers that must be read together: flow rate in cubic metres per hour (m³/h) and total dynamic head in metres. Flow rate decides how fast the pool turns over; head is the resistance the pump has to overcome from pipe friction, fittings, the filter bed and any height difference between the pump and the water surface. Waterstar's 0.75 kW (1 HP) 220V single-phase models — Super Star SS-100M and Hyper Flow HF-100M — deliver a maximum flow of 70 m³/h and a maximum head of 19 metres. Those two maxima never occur at the same operating point: as head rises the delivered flow falls along the pump curve, so a pump installed on a long suction run with several bends will pass noticeably less water than the headline figure.
Motor kW and HP: which size for which pool
The Waterstar range runs from 0.75 kW (1 HP) up to 3 HP in both the Super Star and the Hyper Flow families. SS-100M and HF-100M are the 1 HP 220V single-phase units for small and medium residential pools. SS-150M and HF-150M step up to 1.5 HP for medium villa pools and longer pipe runs. SS-200M and HF-200M at 2 HP suit large residential pools, roof-top pools with high static head, and small hotel pools. SS-300T and HF-300T are the 3 HP three-phase units built for commercial duty: hotel, club and competition pools, and any installation where the filter and pipework are sized for continuous high flow.
Single phase or three phase
Model codes ending in M are 220V single-phase 50 Hz; codes ending in T are 380V three-phase 50 Hz. Single-phase pumps are the right choice for villas and residential compounds where only a domestic supply is available, and they run directly from a standard consumer unit with the correct breaker and residual-current protection. Three-phase pumps draw a lower current per phase for the same output, run cooler, start more gently and tolerate long duty cycles better, which is why every commercial installation with a three-phase supply should specify the T variant. Three-phase units are also the ones to pair with a star-delta or soft starter and with the variable-frequency drives used to trim running cost outside peak hours.
Self-priming operation and daily running
Every Waterstar pool pump is self-priming. The pump body holds a volume of water in the strainer housing that lets the impeller evacuate air from the suction line and draw water up without a foot valve, so the pump recovers on its own after backwashing, after the basket is emptied, or after the water level has dropped below the skimmer. Correct priming still depends on the installation: keep the suction line as short and as straight as possible, avoid high points that trap air, and make sure every union and lid O-ring seals, because an air leak on the suction side is the most common cause of a pump that will not hold prime.
The large clear-lid strainer basket lets the operator see when leaves and hair are restricting flow, and it comes out without tools. Cleaning it weekly keeps the flow rate at design and protects the mechanical seal. Seals, impellers, baskets and lids are stocked locally in Egypt, so a pump stays in service instead of waiting on an import cycle — and a factory-new Waterstar unit with full manufacturer warranty is a better long-term buy than a rebuilt second-hand motor of unknown history.
Matching the pump to the filter
A pool pump should never be sized in isolation. The filter sets the maximum flow the system can accept: push more water through a sand bed than its area allows and filtration quality collapses, even though the water looks like it is moving faster. As a guide, a 1 HP Waterstar pump pairs with a T500-20 or T600-24 sand filter, the 1.5 HP and 2 HP models suit T750-30 and T900-36, and the 3 HP three-phase units belong with T1005-42 or a side-mount WS-series vessel.
