What a check valve is protecting

A check valve allows flow in one direction and closes against flow in the other. In a pool circuit that single function protects several things at once: it stops water draining back through the pump when the circuit shuts down, which is what causes a pump to lose its prime and run dry on the next start; it prevents water in an elevated feature, spillover spa or raised return line from siphoning back into the plant room; and it keeps dosed chemical from travelling backwards along the line towards the pump and filter.

Because the valve only matters when flow reverses, a failed check valve is invisible during normal running and is usually discovered as a symptom somewhere else - a pump that will not hold prime, a spa that empties overnight, or corroded fittings upstream of a chlorinator.

Four bodies, matched to the pipe

Waterstar supplies the check valve in four bodies: CV-50 at 50 mm and CV-63 at 63 mm on the metric side, CV-1.5 at 1.5 inch and CV-2 at 2 inch on the imperial side. This mirrors the connection axis used across the rest of the Waterstar range, so the valve matches the skimmers, main drains and fittings already specified on the same job.

Select the body from the pipe it sits in, not from the pump size. Dropping to a smaller valve to save on the fitting adds a restriction exactly where the circuit can least afford one, and the resulting head loss is paid for by the pump for the life of the installation.

Installation and orientation

The body is supplied in two parts, bonded on assembly with a solvent cement suited to the material. Follow the flow direction marked on the body - a check valve installed backwards will either hold the circuit closed or chatter against the seat until it damages itself.

Plan for access. The valve is a wearing part with a moving element inside it, and a body cemented into a run with no union either side has to be cut out to be serviced. Fitting unions or a removable spool on both sides costs very little at first fix and turns a pipework job into a ten-minute swap later.
