Side-Mount Commercial Sand Filters

Filament-wound side-mount sand filters from 1200 to 2000 mm for hotels, clubs and public pools. Free-lid service format, manufactured in Egypt by Waterstar.

Why commercial plants specify the side-mount format

On a side-mount filter the valve sits on the shell, plumbed into the side of the vessel, and the top of the tank carries nothing but a removable lid. That single design decision defines the whole commercial service routine: media is loaded straight down through the full-width opening, the bed can be inspected and levelled without touching a single pipe, and a media change at the end of its life is a shovel job rather than a dismantling job. In a hotel or club plant room, where the filter works long hours every day and staff open it on a schedule, the free lid pays back its extra floor space many times over the life of the vessel.

The WS-series: 1200 to 2000 millimetres

Waterstar manufactures the WS-series as filament-wound vessels in five diameters — WS-1200, WS-1400, WS-1600, WS-1800 and WS-2000 — covering tanks from 1200 to 2000 millimetres. Filament winding lays a continuous fiber under tension around the vessel, producing a shell that carries commercial duty cycles and the pressure swings of daily backwashing season after season. The large diameters matter in collective use: a wider bed does the same work at a calmer pace, with longer intervals between washes. On larger projects several vessels are banked in parallel — the arrangement engineers call a filter battery — so that one unit can be isolated for service while the others keep the pool in operation.

Planning service access around the filter battery

A side-mount installation is planned around access as much as around hydraulics. Leave clear height above every lid for a media loading platform and the lifting of sand bags; keep the valve face and its unions reachable without ladders; and give each vessel its own isolation valves so the battery keeps running while one tank is open. The media itself — washed graded silica in the two granulometries listed on the Waterstar filtration media page — should be stored dry near the plant room so a scheduled recharge never waits on deliveries. Send the pool volume, bather load and plant room drawings to the Waterstar factory engineers and they will return the number of WS-series vessels, the diameter and the service layout for the project.
