Nicheless or Niche: Match the Light to the Pool Shell

Every underwater lighting decision starts with the pool shell, not with the catalogue page. A nicheless fixture such as our LL series threads onto a standard wall conduit and sits almost flush, which makes it the natural choice for new concrete shells, compact spas and pools where the owner wants a clean wall line. A niche light, by contrast, sits in a housing built into the wall, gives you a larger lit aperture and keeps the cable termination inside a dedicated recess. In more than thirty years of plant rooms and pool walls I have learned one simple rule: pick the fitting that suits the structure you are building first, then choose the wattage, and never do it the other way around.

The LL Series: 18W, 24W and 36W Nicheless LED Lights

The LL-18, LL-24 and LL-36 are nicheless underwater LED lights running on 12-14V AC, each supplied with a 3 m cable and a choice of warm or white output. Wattage selection is really about water volume and finish colour: an 18W unit covers a small private pool with a light interior, 24W suits mid-size pools, and 36W is what I specify for dark finishes, deep ends and wide pools where the light has to travel. Because the fixture body is slim, spacing matters more than raw power; two well-placed 24W lights usually outperform a single oversized unit. The 3 m factory cable reaches most junction points without a splice, which is exactly where you want no splice at all.

Niche Lights for Concrete and Liner Pools

For projects that call for a traditional recessed fitting we manufacture two dedicated niche lights: the UWL-1 for concrete pools and the UWL-1-L for liner pools. Both are built to international safety measures with cable glands and neoprene seals, and both are chemical-resistant, a detail that matters across MENA installations where chlorine and salinity run high in summer. The liner version differs in how it clamps and seals against the membrane, so never fit a concrete-spec body into a liner wall and expect the seal to hold. Order the exact variant for your shell type; the sealing hardware is not interchangeable between the two, and a slow weep behind a liner is the most expensive leak you will ever chase.

Retrofits and IP68 Practice on Site

An IP68 rating on the datasheet only survives if site practice respects it: keep the factory cable uncut wherever possible, terminate above water level, and tighten glands by hand plus a quarter turn instead of crushing the neoprene. On retrofits, an existing niche can usually accept a modern fitting, while pools with no niches at all are ideal candidates for nicheless LL units run through a cored conduit. Test every light for a full day at operating depth before finishing the deck.
