The Complete Guide to Pool Pump Selection
Why Pump Selection Matters
Choosing the right pool pump is one of the most critical decisions in pool equipment planning. An undersized pump won't circulate water effectively, while an oversized pump wastes energy and can damage your filtration system.
Step 1: Calculate Your Pool Volume
The first step is knowing your pool's volume in cubic meters. For rectangular pools, multiply length × width × average depth. For irregular shapes, use our Pool Calculator.
Step 2: Determine Flow Rate
Your pump should be able to turn over the entire pool volume in 6-8 hours. Divide your pool volume by the desired turnover time to get the required flow rate in m³/h.
Example Calculation
A 50m³ pool with an 8-hour turnover needs: 50 ÷ 8 = 6.25 m³/h flow rate.
Step 3: Consider Head Loss
Head loss from pipes, fittings, and filters reduces effective flow. Add 30-50% to your calculated flow rate to compensate.
Waterstar Pump Range
Our Super Star series is ideal for residential pools up to 60m³, while the Hyper Flow range handles commercial installations up to 200m³.
