Pool Pumps: How to Choose the Right Pump
The pump draws water from the skimmers and main drain, pushes it through the filter and returns it to the pool. Choosing one starts from two numbers: the flow you need (m³/h) and the head it must work against, meaning the resistance of the pipes, fittings and filter. Horsepower alone does not tell you whether a pump suits a pool.

All models run at 2800–2840 rpm with Class F insulation and IP55 protection, and carry a 2-year warranty. Single-phase models run on 220–240 V; the 3 HP models need a three-phase 220/380 V supply. SuperStar suits larger 2″ pipework; HyperFlow is the compact choice for tight plant rooms.
Which power does your pool need?
As a starting point for residential pools at a typical operating head:
- 1 HP: about 15 m³/h
- 1.5 HP: about 22 m³/h
Compare this with the pool's circulation flow (volume ÷ 8 hours, explained in the sand filter guide) and make sure the filter's rated flow is not lower than the pump's flow. For example, our Villa Filtration Set for pools up to 150 m³ pairs a 1.5 HP SuperStar with the T900-36 filter.
These figures are a starting point, not a selection. The final choice is made on the pump's performance curve at your pool's actual operating point, which depends on pipe lengths and diameters, fittings, the filter and any heating or water features. A bigger pump is not a better pump: it costs more to run, raises the pressure across the filter and can push the flow above the filter's rated flow, which spoils filtration.
