Air blowers and the water/air jet: why a spa needs one

The difference between a warm bath and a jacuzzi is air. A spa pump alone moves water; it is the air injected into that water stream that produces the dense, foaming bubble column people buy a jacuzzi for. Waterstar's spa water/air jet (ACC-WJ-XX-XX) is the fitting that does this: it mixes an air line into the pressurised water line at the jet body, so each nozzle discharges an aerated stream instead of a flat jet of water. Air is drawn either by the venturi at the jet itself or, on larger installations, pushed by a dedicated blower feeding a ring manifold.

Sizing the air side follows the number of jets, not the size of the tub. A useful working figure is roughly 3 to 5 m³/h of air per jet at 0.15 to 0.25 bar; a six-jet home spa therefore needs air delivery in the region of 20 to 30 m³/h, and a twelve-jet unit roughly double that. Run the air manifold above the water line with a loop higher than the maximum water level so the tub cannot siphon back into the blower when it stops, and keep the air line the same diameter along its whole length — a single restriction removes the pressure the jets need. Waterstar's engineering team sizes the blower and the manifold for your jet count as part of the quotation.

Jet count and pump selection

Each jet needs a share of the circulating flow, typically 4 to 6 m³/h of water per jet at 1.0 to 1.5 bar at the jet body. Multiply by the jet count, add the losses in the pipework, and you have the duty point the pump must hold — not the pump's headline maximum. Waterstar's self-priming pumps cover that duty directly: the 0.75 kW (1 HP) 220V single-phase Super Star SS-100M and Hyper Flow HF-100M reach a maximum 70 m³/h and 19 m head, and the 1.5 HP SS-150M and HF-150M give the extra head that longer runs and higher jet counts consume. A six-jet home spa is normally a 1 HP duty; a ten to twelve jet unit or a spa with a long equipment run belongs on 1.5 HP or 2 HP.

Keep the spa's jet loop hydraulically separate from any filtration loop that also serves a pool. Sharing one pump between a 60 m³ pool and a 1.5 m³ spa forces a compromise that under-serves both: the pool wants continuous low-rate turnover, the spa wants short bursts of high pressure. Two pumps and a pair of isolating valves cost less than a system that never quite works.

Heating: the calculation that decides everything

Heat demand is what separates spa design from pool design. A jacuzzi holds very little water but runs at 37 to 40 °C, roughly 12 to 15 degrees above a typical Egyptian pool. The energy to raise a volume of water is about 1.16 kWh per cubic metre per degree Celsius, so lifting a 1.5 m³ tub by 15 °C needs roughly 26 kWh of delivered heat — about 5 kW of heating for a five-hour heat-up, or 9 kW to do it in three. Standing losses matter just as much: an uncovered spa at 38 °C loses heat continuously by evaporation, which is why an insulated cover is not an accessory but part of the heating system. Waterstar does not manufacture spa heaters, so specify a heater or heat pump alongside our equipment and we will confirm the hydraulic layout and pipe sizing around it.

Spa lighting and drainage

Spa lighting runs on the same low-voltage principle as pool lighting: 12 V through an isolating transformer, never mains voltage in a small body of water shared by several bathers. Our 18 W LED underwater light (LIT-SP-XX-XX) suits a single-niche home jacuzzi, while the 24 W and 36 W units carry a larger or deeper spa. Place the niche below the lowest jet line so the beam is not broken by the bubble column.

Drainage is a safety item, not a plumbing detail. Waterstar's spa drain (DRN-JC-ST-XX) is designed for the small-volume, high-suction condition a spa creates. Always install two suction outlets, spaced apart and manifolded together, so a single blocked cover cannot generate entrapment suction on a bather.

Water treatment for hot, small-volume water

A spa is the hardest water in any installation to keep stable. The bather load per cubic metre can be a hundred times that of a swimming pool, temperature accelerates chlorine loss, and aeration strips the residual continuously. Practical consequences: check the residual before every session rather than weekly, hold pH between 7.2 and 7.6 because sanitiser efficiency collapses above that, and keep filtration running through and after use rather than only on a timer. A Waterstar automatic chlorinator (AC-12 or AC-24) gives a steady feed instead of the dose-and-crash cycle of hand dosing, and a correctly sized sand filter such as the 24-inch side-mount FLT-SF-S-24 will hold clarity at spa turnover rates.
